ANNOUNCEMENT
Unanswered request by the Observatory regarding tree mutilations and other destructive actions related to green space management in Syros – Submission of a new request and additional evidence.
In September 2022, we sent a written request to the competent authorities (Municipality of Syros–Ermoupoli – Region of South Aegean – Forestry Directorate of the Cyclades Prefecture), asking for explanations and the provision of data concerning the mass mutilation of trees and other destructive actions affecting vegetation taking place in Syros.
Six months have passed since then, and to date, no authority has responded to us, despite the legal obligation of public services to reply to submitted requests. During this period, the mutilation of trees has intensified, taking on uncontrolled proportions.
The Observatory, assessing the issue of the mutilation of the few trees on our island as extremely serious, has sent a new (reminder) request to these authorities, including additional evidence showing that the methods being applied are unscientific, have destructive consequences for the trees, and drastically increase the likelihood of future accidents due to branch breakage.
We hope that this time we will receive scientific data and (convincing) responses that will, at the very least, prove us wrong and demonstrate that the authorities are acting based on scientific criteria and with the protection of environmental quality and trees in mind. Above all, that they are not creating conditions that significantly increase the risk of future branch falls and injuries.
