Submission of an investigative request (with notification to the Public Prosecutor’s Office of First Instance of Syros) regarding the mutilation of trees and other destructive vegetation management practices on Syros

Since the mass mutilation of trees, which has been systematically carried out in recent years on Syros (as well as throughout Greece), has no logical environmental explanation and certainly cannot be characterized as “pruning,” the Environmental Quality Observatory of Syros decided to seek answers from the responsible authorities to basic questions such as: “Why are the trees being mutilated?”, “Who makes the decisions?”, “Who benefits?”, “Who is responsible?”, etc.

In this context, we submitted a relevant investigative request to the involved authorities (the Municipality of Syros–Ermoupoli, the South Aegean Region, and the Cyclades Forestry Directorate), seeking the relevant information. Furthermore, since the destructive management of vegetation on our island is not limited only to the mutilation of trees but also includes other kinds of destructive actions, we requested information on some indicative and particularly striking cases of such practices.

This document was also forwarded to the Public Prosecutor’s Office of First Instance of Syros for any actions it may deem appropriate.

We are eagerly awaiting the responses of the services, which we will make public.
